It is that time of the year again when all eyes are set on the ‘frow’. From October 21 to 25, 2026, South African Fashion Week (SAFW) opens its doors at The Forum, Hyde Park Corner, for the Autumn / Winter ’27 (AW27) collections. And if you do not have your front row – frow – seat ready, make sure you purchase your tickets soon!

For 29 years, SAFW has stood as a beacon of contemporary urban individuality and ethical design. Following a landmark collaboration with Pierre Cardin, this season turns every eye back to the power of human hands – to the master artisans, the delicate tailoring, the intricate beadwork, and the soul of South African craftsmanship built in local workrooms. As founder Lucilla Booyzen shares, true sustainability in fashion starts from the bottom up, nurturing talent from the classroom to the atelier to empower the entire African fashion value chain.

Here is how the narrative unfolds on the runway:

David Tlale opens the week on Tuesday, October 20. A giant in African fashion, he returns not only with his own collection but with Interns by David Tlale, introducing five emerging young designers alongside him on a single stage.

Black Coffee presents Unfolding, exploring intricate design transformations.

HELON MELON brings Helon Melon Always On.

Ephymol takes the stage with The Rebirth of Slow Classic.

Sober Design House celebrates 20 years of timeless elegance with The Next Chapter.

TRRR…PHAAA! unveils The New Resonance.

Colleen Eitzen makes her return with Origin.

Echoes of Earth, Heritage, and Transformation

Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs presents The New Earth – An Exploration of Transformation: Landscapes Shaped by Time – What We Wear Another Life, blending environmental storytelling with fashion.

Thabo Makhetha introduces Eako, Eahao (What’s Mine Is Yours), weaving cultural heritage into wearable art.

INSYD/OWT Creatives presents Living a Creative Reality.

Dali Ngcebetsha presents Metamorphosis.

Irene Makhavhu brings Tshedza (meaning light), shedding illumination on local craft.

Ana Nunes presents her ANUNES collection EKWIKWI – Soma Irene.

Emelia D, the winner of the SS26 Scouting Menswear Competition, returns to showcase her new work on the runway.

Fields to Fashion

On Saturday evening, October 24, the runway turns into a grand celebration as SAFW presents Field to Fashion, bringing the full cycle of fashion, earth, and artistry back to the people.

In a landmark moment for global fashion, South African Fashion Week (SAFW) will merge elite football with high fashion. Billed as a global first for Fashion Week, the upcoming Field to Fashion showcase will see players from Johannesburg’s iconic Orlando Pirates Football Club swap their boots for bespoke runway looks. The showcase marks the penultimate show of the SAFW Autumn/Winter 2027 Collections. The event promises to bring a vibrant new energy to the runway by pairing Orlando Pirates athletes with leading South African stylists and acclaimed designers, including Neo Serati, David Tlale, Good Good Good, and Yona.

Beyond the spectacle of sports icons walking the runway, Field to Fashion supports SAFW’s broader mission to foster a commercially viable local fashion industry. By tapping into the immense cultural power of football, the initiative opens doors for designers to reach new audiences, broaden media exposure, and establish sustainable partnerships beyond the seasonal catwalk.

“We want to bring art and sport to the SAFW runway because fashion connects with both,” says Lucilla Booyzen, Founder of South African Fashion Week. “Together, they allow us to tell South African stories and show our designers’ work differently. These collaborations allow our designers to broaden their reach, engage new audiences, create content, and attract media attention. We want these connections to lead to more interest in South African design, more sales, and growth for our designers’ businesses.”

For the designers involved, the collaboration provides a vital commercial bridge to connect with diverse consumer bases and generate fresh content. For the players, it serves as a unique platform to showcase a personal side of their style identity while championing homegrown creative talent.   Founded in 1997, SAFW continues its legacy as a designer-led incubator, connecting emerging and established talent with mentorship, retail access, and market opportunities. Field to Fashion stands as a testament to that legacy, proving that when South African sport and style align, design truly becomes industry.
