Catherine Marshall is the first female winemaker in South Africa to launch her own eponymous wine label. Her pioneering work in Pinot Noir production and her role in the Garagiste Movement have made her a respected figure in the South African wine industry. (Garagiste definition: a small-scale entrepreneurial winemaker, originally from the Bordeaux region of France, especially one who does not adhere to the traditions of winemaking. A typical Garagiste relies on a notion normally alien to the French, that technique can surmount terroir.)

Graduating from Elsenburg in 1991, Marshall has honed her winemaking expertise through apprenticeships in France, USA, and Australia. As a cellar master at several prestigious wineries in Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Elgin, she garnered numerous awards, including 5-star Platter Wine Guide accolades and Tim Atkin 95+ ratings. Her pioneering work in Pinot Noir production and her role in the Garagiste Movement have made her a respected figure in the South African wine industry.

Marshall will be bringing decades of experience and passion to an intimate wine dinner at Clico Boutique Hotel’s Sec Restaurant scheduled for later in October.

The evening will be an exclusive collaboration between chef extraordinaire, Dario de Angeli and Marshall.

Guests will be treated to a meticulously crafted six-course dinner, with each course thoughtfully paired with one of Marshall’s exceptional wines. This culinary journey will highlight the unique flavours and textures of South African cuisine on a menu curated by Chef de Angeli, while Marshall shares personal insights and stories from her illustrious career in winemaking.

Guests will explore a variety of her celebrated wines, including her award-winning Pinot Noir and Chenin Blanc, as well as a surprise dessert wine to complement the finale.

In addition to her professional achievements, Marshall’s personal passions include mountain hiking, travel, and entertaining — traits that lend a dynamic edge to her approach to winemaking and storytelling.
